The British Library is one of the World’s greatest research libraries, committed to providing researchers with access to reliable digital content now and into the future. The digital collection is one of the most exciting and heterogeneous in the world, containing everything from digitised books and newspapers to born digital maps, eBooks and sound.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to help preserve the Library’s digital content. As a software tester within the digital preservation team, you will help ensure that the preservation software used by the Library is fit for purpose by helping to develop and maintain a reusable, standardised testing process for tools and workflows. Liaising closely with other Library colleagues, you will utilise your growing understanding of digital preservation to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of preservation tools used to process digital collection content.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent software development skills across a range of programming languages, with experience installing, testing and evaluating software against business and technical needs. Strong research and analytical skills will help you quickly understand the scope of the preservation software domain and its needs, and help ensure you are able to maintain your awareness of any advances that may be useful to the Library. You’ll be confident working both as part of a team and independently as required. Most importantly, you should care about the longevity of the Library’s digital collections and be able to demonstrate a willingness to understand and address the long-term preservation issues they face.
