The University Library Service (ULS) at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual as the Library’s Research Data Manager.   In collaboration with colleagues across Schools and Professional Services, the post holder will lead ULS support for the University’s Research Archive Service.  This will include the provision of professional advice and guidance on all aspects of research data management for researchers along with the establishment of key contacts within and beyond Cardiff University, including outside bodies such as JISC.

The successful applicant will have substantial knowledge of research data management, data archiving and the research lifecycle; the ability to lead high-quality user-focussed projects, and to influence strategic developments. Experience of managing a data repository or archiving service is desirable.

The post is full-time (35 hours per week) and is open ended, with a starting date of 1st August 2018.  

Key Duties:

In conjunction with colleagues in Research and Innovation Services and in University IT you will:

  • provide professional advice and guidance on the creation, deposit, storage and access to research data to internal and external customers, that will have institution wide impact;
  • develop and deliver training on open data, archiving and the use of the University’s Research Archive Service (RAS);
  • establish relationships with key contacts to ensure role objectives are met, develop appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Professional Services and outside bodies as required;
  • instruct and guide other employees across the university on research data management, including metadata creation;
  • investigate and analyse specific issues within research data management creating recommendation reports and developing, disseminating and promoting policies to promote good research data management practices;
  • be the Service Manager for the RAS according to internal and external requirements including developing business cases for major changes or enhancements;
  • create and participate in specific working groups of colleagues across the university to achieve University Library Service objectives;
  • plan and deliver projects, managing the operation of project teams as needed, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required;
  • collaborate in the development of the Research Portal to ensure that the RAS is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements and contributing to the development of institution wide standards;
  • to promote and advocate for university-wide usage of the RAS and the adoption of open data;
  • provide bid support for researchers including advice and costs for use of the RAS over the lifecycle of the data;
  • to represent the University Library Service at external seminars/conferences and meetings and to contribute to raising the profile of Cardiff University through professional activities locally, national and internationally;
  • undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance;
  • undertake a variety of  administrative duties to support the department;
  • ensure that the ULS Regulations are observed;
  • actively contribute to the provision of outstanding/excellent customer service in line with the University Library Service’s Customer Care Policy and Customer Service Excellence Award.

General Duties:

  •  ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties;
  • abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity;
  • perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

 You may be required to work in more than one library site during the course of your employment.

Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification/NVQ 5 or equivalent, or equivalent experience.
  • Substantial experience of research data management, data archiving and the research lifecycle.
  • Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within research data management, to be recognised as an authority in the field.
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures and in developing and delivering specialist training to a variety of audiences.
  • Able to influence senior level decisions within research data management that have a strategic impact.
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs, adapt the service, and set customer expectations.
  • Proven ability to develop networks and to work as part of a cross-departmental team in order to contribute to long term developments.
  • Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing both practical and innovative solutions.
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within research data management.
  • Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working in a Higher Education research environment
  • Experience of managing a data repository or archiving service
  • Direct involvement in a research activity
  • Successful completion of the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent.
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
